All animals at shelters want to live in a forever home, but some are always turned down by prospective adopters without any fault of their own. Certain animals seem to turn off people from wanting to take them home because of their slightly distinctive appearance.
Espresso, a shelter cat, is currently searching for her permanent home, but because of her atypically large eyes, people continue to ignore her.
The Ohio SPCA & Humane Society posted a picture of Espresso, a cat under their care, on August 2. (She is called after the popular song “That’s that me, espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter.)
Espresso was a stray who had been hurt and was taking care of her young. Espresso’s wounds have healed and her kids have all moved out into forever homes, but she has been having trouble finding a place of her own for the past month.
The staff at the shelter believes that she might be turned down by adopters because of the way she looks, particularly her eyes, which are clearly different sizes.
Espresso’s right eye is smaller than her left, though it’s unclear if this is due to a congenital condition or a previous injury. Fortunately, the cat isn’t bothered by it or has any health effects.
Although her caregivers believe that her eyes give her a “unique” appearance, it’s possible that people are neglecting her in favor of cats with more traditional looks. Ohio SPCA posted on Facebook, “Unfortunately, people will see something different about an animal and tend to not give them a chance.”
Espresso is still searching for a place to call home where she will be accepted for who she is. She is a “quiet but very friendly girl,” according to the shelter, and gets along well with both people and other cats of all ages.
The shelter’s website has adoption forms for download; fill them out and send an email to [email protected]. You can visit Espresso and the other adoptable cats during business hours, which are Wednesday through Friday from 2 to 7 PM and Saturday from noon to 4 PM.
Every cat in the shelter has received vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spaying or neutering.
We think Espresso is gorgeous and special, and we hope she finds a home soon. No animal should ever be disregarded based only on their appearance!
