Alice Fredenham kept her decision to try out for “Britain’s Got Talent” a secret from her friends and family. That way, she wouldn’t have to notify anyone if the judges rejected her.

The judges asked Alice how she was feeling as she entered the stage, to which she replied, “Scared.” Before going on stage, Alice admitted to the interviewers that she had stage fright her entire life and was very apprehensive.

Alice was really tense because she thought the judges’ rejection of her would indicate that she wasn’t good enough. The audience held their breath as her music started to play.

The competitor picked the jazz staple “My Funny Valentine,” which used to be Chet Baker’s go-to song. There was an uneasy silence in the stadium during the introductory notes.

Next, Alice began to sing the opening line, “My comical, funny Valentine…” She spoke with a little tremble. Simon Cowell was notably frowning. Maybe he didn’t want to look at Alice and agitate her further.

But Alice turned up the volume and struck some unexpected notes when she reached the lyric, “You make me smile with my heart.” Simon raised his head and flashed a smile.

Throughout the song, Alice used arm movements that brought to mind performances by Nina Simone. She amazed Simon and the other judges. Alice received a standing ovation from the crowd and all four judges for her seductive performance of “My Funny Valentine,” which earned her a spot in the next round.
