I was awakened that night by spooky dreams about the girl’s residence and the sound of shadows whispering. When morning finally arrived, I was worn out. I glanced out the window once more as I finished my tea. The girl was beckoning to me with her little hand while waving. “That’s it!” I’ve finished this. “I’m going to speak with her parents,” I informed Sandy. I’m getting scared of her. She made a similar motion last night. “What is it that she wants from me?” I made plans on how to find her apartment, determined. I almost fell when the door opened after I rang the doorbell. No one had noticed the new family when they moved into the neighborhood. Sandy and Jim, who lived in the house across the street, didn’t care that they didn’t interact with their neighbors. The daughter of the new neighbors, who waved to Jim day and night, captivated Jim. She had just turned five.
One evening, he turned to his wife, Sandy, who was reading her book as usual, and said, “Sandy, that little girl is waving at me again from the window.” Sandy asked if he ever waved back, grinning at his fixation on the small neighbor. Jim replied that he hadn’t waved back because the entire experience had sent shivers down his spine. He felt uneasy about the girl for some reason. She had a serious expression. It seemed as if she was trying to convey a message. She appeared to be looking for redemption. Sandy laughed at Jim’s words, telling him to let such thoughts go, as the girl was probably bored and had been standing at the window all day. Jim had a dream about the little girl that night, and it tormented him. The next day, despite how awkward it sounded, he informed his wife that he was going to visit the neighbors. Sandy encouraged him to visit the neighbors if he believed it would help him forget about the troubled girl.
He could no longer ignore the little girl waving. “That’s it, Sandy.” “I’ll talk to her parents.” I’m beginning to get scared of her. She made a similar motion last night. “What is it that she wants from me?” Jim approached the house and pressed the doorbell. A familiar voice answered, “Juliette?” As she opened the door, a familiar voice muttered in shock. “It’s been a long time, Jim,” she remarked. Before he could react, the girl appeared at the door and shouted out, “Daddy!” Jim gripped the door handle, striving to keep on his feet.
Juliette invited him over and explained that she had discovered she was expecting a child six years prior when they split up, but Jim had already moved out and she was unable to get in touch with him because she didn’t know where he lived. Heidi, his own daughter, had been waving at him the entire time. When Jim arrived home, he went on his knees in grief and told Sandy the truth. Sandy was in full astonishment. After years of trying to conceive, she and Jim finally came to terms with the fact that it was simply not their destiny. Sandy indicated that he needed to get a DNA test. After an agonizing wait, the results verified Jim’s deepest feelings: the girl was his.
Juliette apologized, stating that it was never her intention to complicate their lives; she only wanted Heidi to know who her father was. Both Jim and Sandy stated that there was no need for an apology. They were delighted Heidi will be a part of their lives. Heidi went back to her window that night. She waved at Jim, and for the first time, he waved back. His heart was filled with immense joy. Although he never expected to become a father in this way, he was on the correct path.
