Tommy appeared like any other steer when the family initially bought him.
Originally from the Alps, Tommy is a massive Brown Swiss steer who has found a loving home on a farm in New England.
Tommy is not an exception to the rule that Brown Swiss are the big boys in the dairy industry.
In 2010, Tommy was spared from sale by his owner, Fred, who has a talent for rearing calves.
According to Laurie, Fred’s daughter, “Tommy was named after Tom Brady, who was the quarterback for our beloved New England Patriots football team at the time.”
Yes, a GOAT quarterback inspired the naming of this GOAT (Greatest of All Time) steer!
“Is Tommy dinner material?” is what you may be asking yourself now.
Hold on to your cows, or horses, as it were.
Laurie corrects the record right away, saying that Tommy is a beloved family pet.
She vows that Tommy will be buried on this farm when his time comes, despite the fact that people often make jokes about eating him.
Tommy is a kind giant with a golden heart; don’t be fooled by his enormous size and striking horns.
Laurie remarks, “Tommy has a calm and peaceful demeanor despite his size and his enormous horns.”
Tommy is a good example of the friendly nature that Brown Swiss are known for.
The fact that he is a steer, a castrated bull, may further contribute to his laid-back disposition.
Our Tommy is not one of those bulls who can be a real handful.
Tommy is popular not only with adults but also with children.
Even the smallest hands can reach up and pet him because of the unique manner he lowers his head.
Laurie continues, “Whenever my dad is around, he keeps a close eye on him and is always very aware of where he is.”
Tommy is a very kind and amiable animal, which is evident from the affection and attention he has received from Fred.
What does Tommy’s typical day entail?
Well, there’s a lot of chewing involved!
Tommy consumes over thirty pounds of dry grain, more than seventy-five pounds of hay, and an enormous thirty to forty gallons of water every day, if not more.
That steer is really thirsty!
Tommy has been keeping quiet because of a sore foot, even though he enjoys exploring the meadows and munching on the crisp, green grass.
Laurie says, “We have had specialized hoof specialists and veterinarians work on him, but when they have problems with their hooves, it’s a long, slow healing process.”
“Especially an animal as heavy as Tommy.”
Tommy has his comfort foods to keep him content, so don’t worry.
He loves apples, and Fred does everything in his power to provide for him.
Laurie explains, “My dad will go to the market and spend all his money on apples.” In the meadow, Tommy is even capable of shaking down untamed apple trees.
And if there are no apples on the menu?
He’ll be content with carrots or cinnamon buns.
Tommy likes the simple things in life, like chewing cud and taking lengthy naps, when he’s not eating.
However, Laurie observes that as he has aged, “he has slowed down quite a bit.”
Given his size, people frequently ponder what Tommy’s “job” is.
Laurie explains, “I always state that Tommy’s job is to keep my dad young and active, and he obviously takes his task seriously.”
“At nearly 80, my dad still works harder than most men half his age.”
The tale of Tommy and Fred has won people over all around the world.
When Tommy was acknowledged by Guinness World Records, Fred was ecstatic.
Laurie brightens, “I knew it was a chance to capture them in history and share this wonderful pair with the world because they are legendary.”
The finest aspect?
the love and appreciation that this remarkable pair has received on a global scale.
Laurie says, “To say we are thrilled doesn’t do it justice.”
“We can’t wait to see this incredible creature in print and are so honored and happy to have him among us!”
