When a 12-year-old Georgia boy’s close buddies poured boiling water on him, tearing the skin off his face and leaving him severely burned, a sleepover joke took a terrifying turn.
Trey West of Georgia spent New Year’s Day in the hospital, recuperating from the terrible burns that were inflicted on the majority of his face after three of his pals apparently enjoyed amusing themselves by dousing his face in boiling water while he slept.
The 12-year-old was having a sleepover with three other boys, ages 12 to 15, in his neighbor’s apartment in Tifton, according to WALB 10.
Trey was asleep at the time of the incident, while the other preteens were playing video games. Then, according to Trey’s mother, Tiffany West, one of the children threw hot water on him.
I mean, I’m at a loss for words right now. West described the alleged prank that resulted in second-degree burns, mostly on the boy’s face, necessitating rapid medical attention, saying, “In that moment I was just mad, hurt, in shock.”
“I was flushed. All I wanted to do was move quickly to provide him some assistance.
According to Medical News Today, severe burns can cause excruciating pain, and after almost months of recovery, “second-degree burns often leave a scar, which may fade over several years.”
“Numb”
After being taken to the hospital, West’s son had surgery to repair his wounds.
“He was taken to the Augusta burn center. Surgery was necessary for him. Naturally, he is now recuperating at home after his surgery. Regarding Trey’s upcoming trip, which would involve both physical and emotional challenges, West stated, “But it is going to take him 12-14 days to heal.”
“You must be shocked to learn that your friends can harm you in this way. Just awful, like someone you trusted. According to the boy’s aunt Nachelle Austile, “He never imagined something like this would happen to him.”
I always ask him if he’s upset or depressed.Austile remarks, “He just doesn’t have [any] emotion about it,” and West responds, “He’s numb about it.”
After being taken into custody, the three lads who pulled the practical joke were subsequently allowed to return to their families while they await court appearances that are set for next month.
Difficult situations
In the meantime, the victim and his family have received support and money from the community.
In an emotional Facebook message, West thanked well-wishers for their kindness and words of encouragement. She wrote, “My son was receiving so much love when I woke up.” “Knowing that so many people care about me and my son and that we are not alone in this makes me cry.”
In the January 3, 2025 post, West adds, “I fall to my knees every day thanking God that my baby is still here and he is going to be ok because it could have been [worse].”
West praised the positive impact that the community’s generosity has had on their lives, calling her son a “warrior”: “Every gift, donation, encouraging word, and prayer has put a smile on my son’s face!” she continued.
She posted again on social media a few days later, this time stating that her little child was home and doing well.
“After surgery, my son is recuperating wonderfully! After his second follow-up checkup on Tuesday, he could be able to return to school the following week! He does occasionally have some difficult times, but all in all, he is in a pleasant mood,” she adds. He needed to remain elevated and sleep in a recliner when we first got home from the hospital, but he can now sleep normally in his own bed.I cry not just because I’m sad and crazy, but also because I’m happy that my baby son will be okay!
West posted a video of Trey grinning and dancing with his sister on January 11; it’s arguably the cutest update.
