Sadly, the worst of humanity is still evident in 2025 when it comes to how some people handle their dogs. Some people see dogs as disposable, but the majority of us view them as devoted friends who should be loved and cared for.
Unfortunately, that was the situation for Taho, a young pit bull who miraculously survived an unimaginable act of cruelty.
But the saddest possible fate would befall his life.
Deputies from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing suspects in a stolen truck on Interstate 694 in Arden Hills, Minnesota, on the evening of February 1, 2023.
The defendants were traveling at 60 mph in the opposite direction down the interstate and were wanted in connection with gun-related crimes and carjackings.
Officers observed a white object fly out of the car and crash into the pavement as they pursued it. It wasn’t immediately evident what it was.
However, the terrible truth was revealed when deputies checked dashcam footage later: the defendants had tossed a dog from the moving truck.
Taho was that pup.
Smashed onto the freeway
In a Facebook post, the Sheriff’s Office stated, “The suspects continued to refuse to stop and began driving the wrong way on Interstate 694.”
Deputies once yelled for their crew to remain vigilant because they thought the suspects were carrying a weapon. Something was flung onto the roadway and aggressively rolled into oncoming cars as the door opened.
Deputies returned to the scene after apprehending the offenders, but at first they were unable to find the dog. They feared the worse because of the impact and the frigid temperatures over night.
The following morning, however, Taho was discovered despite all odds.
Nestled atop a bank of snow
He was snuggled up on a snowbank, wagging his tail despite being freezing and bruised.
When they first discovered him, Sgt. Dan Young told WCCO, “He was happy-go-lucky.” He was licking us when we even got him up in the van. “He was very, very happy,” Sgt. Young said after the cops gave him a piece of pizza.
After being taken to a veterinarian, Taho received treatment for several injuries and a fractured limb.
Taho had multiple injuries, including a shattered femur, but his attitude appeared unwavering. He earned a spot in Pet Haven’s care and an opportunity at rehabilitation by licking his rescuers’ faces and waving his tail.
As he recovered, Taho was prepared to find a forever home, and a fundraising was started to assist pay for his medical bills. The courageous little dog deserved nothing less than a life full of love, warmth, and the kind of calm that comes from knowing you’re finally safe because he had already been through more than most people could ever conceive.
The tragic conclusion
Unfortunately, Taho’s injuries weren’t the end of it.
His behavior became more erratic and violent as he went through several foster homes. He displayed symptoms of severe psychological trauma and bit multiple caretakers, frequently without obvious triggers. He had been subjected to horrific maltreatment throughout his life, allegedly by a lady who had previously been charged with animal cruelty and drug use. These experiences left him with long-lasting scars.
Taho was given one last chance despite several mishaps. He was placed in a behavioral rehabilitation program by Pet Haven, the Humane Society of the United States, and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite receiving professional care, affection, and patience, his mental health continued to decline. His fear and hostility only increased in spite of being crated, muzzled, and watched over by knowledgeable handlers.
Taho’s behavior was confirmed to be founded in trauma rather than treatable injury after an MRI ruled out neurological explanations. He was no longer able to live fearlessly or engage in social interactions. In order to ensure his safety and the safety of others, the rescue team reluctantly decided to put him to death in a humane manner.
In addition to being tragic, Taho’s story serves as a reminder of the violence that animals can endure and the kindness of people who attempt to help them. In his last moments,
