She marries a 75-year-old sheikh when she is 19 years old. The entire palace was rocked by what transpired on their wedding night.
Anna, who is only nineteen, never would have thought that her life would be so drastically altered. She was raised in a modest Ukrainian family surrounded by rows of vineyards, hearty laughter, and the smoky smell of wine barrels. Before everything fell apart, their family’s vineyard had prospered.
Anna’s family was in danger of losing their farm because they were heavily indebted. Her proud father became despondent when the estate’s workers progressively fled. Then an unexpected offer arrived: a seventy-five-year-old affluent sheikh offered to pay off all debts in exchange for Anna’s marriage.
She was initially appalled at the thought of marrying a man older than her grandfather. But there was a lot of pressure from the family.
She was informed that it was symbolic. All he wants is company. He is considerate. Nothing will be forced by him. Your family will keep the land, and you will be safe.
Duty prevailed.
Anna caved.
In unbelievable luxury, the wedding took place in Marrakech. Her hair was braided with jasmine blossoms, and she wore a stunning gown adorned with gold thread. Visitors applauded as musicians performed mesmerizing songs. For pictures she hoped had never been taken, she grinned.
But anxiety increased as darkness fell. The phrase “this is just for show” kept coming back to her. Nothing will occur.
The bridal chamber’s doors then shut. and everything was different.
The sheikh was obviously weak, but he made it plain what he wanted: a conventional wedding night. Anna’s heart pounded. With tears in her eyes, she pleaded with him to wait. He silently watched her and then lay down without saying anything.
Anna did not sleep that night. She sat motionless beside the window, torn between confusion, remorse, and dread. She was startled out of her reverie before daybreak by an odd sound—erratic breathing that sounded like a quiet alarm.
Rushing to the bed, she did so.
The sheikh was pale, gasping for air, and not responding. She quickly called for assistance. But before dawn, things took an irrevocable turn in spite of everything.
Chaos broke out in the palace. Everyone hurried in, including guards, doctors, attorneys, and relatives. Anna was stunned. But soon later, the actual earthquake struck.
The sheikh had made changes to his will just days prior to that evening. A sizable amount of his fortune, including the Moroccan estate and many foreign holdings, was to be inherited by Anna, who was now his lawful wife.
The family of the dead became furious. She was charged with being a schemer, controlling an elderly guy, and planning the entire affair for the inheritance.
Then came lawsuits. The press was on fire. “Teen Bride Inherits Sheikh’s Fortune” was the headline that cried out.
She was referred to as a predator, a seductress, and a gold-digger. The truth was that she had been alone, that she had been afraid, and that he had never even touched her. None of those assessments, however, revealed this.
Years went by.
Justice decided in her favor after protracted legal battles: the marriage was lawful and the will was upheld. Anna retained her inheritance.
But she was never happy with wealth.
She restored the family vineyard with a large portion of the funds. Women escaping forced marriages found safety on the Moroccan estate. Quiet and reserved, Anna chose a life away from the spotlight and turned down most interviews.
She only spoke up once, in an entry on a little-known blog:
“I never wanted this life. I never asked for the money, the pain, or the judgment. I was just a girl trying to save her family. That night, I was terrified. And when everything stopped, all I felt was emptiness. Not all women who marry rich men are manipulators. Sometimes, they’re just girls trying to hold on to what’s left.”
“This is not the life I ever wanted.” I never requested the judgment, the suffering, or the money. As a young girl, I was attempting to save my family. I was scared that night. And I felt nothing but emptiness when it all stopped. Not every woman who marries a wealthy man is a manipulator. Occasionally, they are merely girls attempting to preserve what remains.
