The men had gone to the lake to fish when they abruptly removed an odd bag from the water, and what they found inside was terrible.
As usual, the fisherman set out early in the morning with a ripped net and an old wooden canoe. For more than a decade, they had been employed at the same location. Everything appeared to be typical. There were a lot of fish this season, so one of the men threw the net a little further, toward the bend by the reeds.
A half hour or so went by. When one fisherman observed something odd in the water, several of them had already begun placing the catch in the box. Something soft, sleek, and wrapped in old cloth had gotten stuck on the net’s edge. It initially appeared to be a bag of rubbish or muck. The fabric stretched taut as he pulled it in, exposing the outline of a heavy, round object. Over the boat there was silence. As he carefully raised the thing out of the water, the others got up to observe.
Although the sack was securely tied, it was not entirely sealed. The fisherman felt a chill run down his spine as he brought it into the light. What was in the sack was
Features of a human face emerged through the damp cloth. Everyone flinched with surprise.
One of the fishermen murmured, “That’s—that’s a head.”
Nothing was touched by them. An hour after they phoned the police, the shore was crowded with officers. The victim turned out to be a man who had vanished a few weeks prior.
He was from the village next door. According to the investigation, he had been dissected and killed with a great deal of savagery. Later, the remaining pieces of his body were discovered scattered over the river.
This finding proved to be crucial in a well-known case: a local citizen who had long been mistrusted by others was found to have been involved in the crime.
In addition to his arrest, the inquiry turned up two more disappearances that were thought to be unconnected.
It was a long time before the fisherman went back to the water. The word “catch” will never mean the same thing to them again.
