I was sitting next to a man on the airline who openly made fun of me because I was overweight, but he later expressed guilt for what he had done.
business class. a lengthy flight. I purchased my ticket in advance and selected a window seat because all I wanted was a quiet flight, some work, and some downtime. Everything went according to plan: travelers found seats, luggage was placed in overhead bins, and water was provided by flight attendants.
A man in a pricey suit came into the cabin after I had taken my seat. He boldly walked over to his seat, which was just next to mine, while carrying a leather bag. After looking at the seat and then at me, he twisted his face violently and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear:
What on earth is this? I feel like I’m in the subway at rush hour even though I paid for business class!
He looked at me disdainfully and rolled his eyes dramatically.
He sat heavily beside me and said, “I need to prepare for an important conference, and now I can’t even sit properly.”
I knew what he was getting at. Or rather— who?
He whispered, loud enough for me to hear, “Why do they even sell seats here to people like her?”
As if to express his annoyance, he sat down and started pushing me with his elbow right away. It was extremely hurtful in addition to being physically unpleasant. Refusing to cry, I looked out the window. I never imagined that someone so mature and respectable could be so vicious.
He shuffled papers, snorted, and appeared to move purposefully during the flight, but he said nothing else. I put up with it. I’m accustomed to discriminatory glances. But not with such obvious animosity.
However, an unforeseen circumstance at the end of the journey caused the man to greatly regret his actions
My economy class assistance came up to me as we started to disembark after the plane touched down. With a courteous nod, he said:
Would it be convenient for you, Mrs. Smith, if we proceeded directly to the conference location after checking into the hotel? I’ve already got everything ready.
The man seated beside me stopped. I sensed his eyes. He abruptly spoke in a totally different tone when the assistant left:
I apologize. Are you taking a plane to the conference as well? I’ve heard that a highly esteemed scientist will be speaking. Smith is also her name.
That’s me, I said coolly as I grabbed my suitcase.
He became pale, astonished, and began to mumble something about how he had heard about my talk on cognitive technology and had long been interested in my work.
I simply gave a courteous smile and turned to leave first. He remained sitting as though someone had taken his breath away.
Hopefully, this stranger will no longer make snap judgments about others based solely on their appearance.
