My mother used to have a family supper every Sunday. However, she texted to cancel the meal one day. I was astonished by what I found when I visited her home.
My mother had established the custom of getting the entire family together for supper every Sunday since my father’s passing. Neither my brother nor I had ever missed it since it had become a regular.
My mother texted me a few hours before the customary dinnertime on a Sunday when I was getting ready for dinner: “Today’s dinner is canceled.” Don’t come, please.
I was momentarily perplexed. My mother is always on time, and she would have informed us much sooner if she had to cancel. I became concerned about this message right away. This whole situation seemed strange.
Regardless, I followed my instincts and went to her residence. I saw that all of the curtains were drawn when I pulled up in front of her house, which was rather uncommon for her.
I was certain then that something was amiss.
I was genuinely astonished by what I discovered when I opened the door to her home.
A man who resembled my father too much was seated at the kitchen table as I walked in.
It was James, her twin, whom we were unaware of.
Before meeting our father, Mom claimed to have loved him.
James had severed all communication with her and departed without providing an explanation.
My mother urged him to leave when he returned this time to ask for another opportunity.
Mom invited us to supper again the following Sunday.
We became closer during this trying time, but it also exposed secrets that altered my view of our family for all time.
