My husband pointed to the door and prevented our daughter from seeing her boyfriend when she brought him home to meet us
Regarding her private life, our daughter had always been reticent. Yes, she talked about her plans, her education, and even rumors about her pals, but she said nothing about boys. She was presumably waiting for the right opportunity to introduce someone special, we used to joke.
And then, at last, that time arrived. It was our daughter’s request that we meet her boyfriend.
I was already working on preparing a festive table in the kitchen on Sunday morning. I assumed my husband’s gloomy demeanor was just nervousness, the usual concern of a father.
I grinned and went to answer the door when it rang. A tall man in a suit was standing on the doorstep. Our daughter is beside him, beaming with joy.
She said, “Mom, Dad, this is… my boyfriend,” with such pride that my heart briefly constricted.
But then I saw a shift in my husband’s expression. It turned pale, then hard.
“You?,” he muttered. Why have you come here?
The man shrugged despite tensing up as well:
— I’m the boyfriend of your daughter.
My husband’s voice faltered, “What?” Please leave my home! Right now!
Our daughter exclaimed, “Dad!” in shock. — What is happening?
At that point, my husband told us the awful truth about our daughter’s new partner.
He clenched his fists and uttered:
— This individual I went to prison because of him. When we were children, he deceived me. He blamed me for everything, even though we got into problems jointly. He caused me to lose a year of my life. He was a classmate of mine once.
There was silence. Our daughter gave us a perplexed and irate look:
— What the heck? He has changed over the past two decades! I adore him!
A former classmate of my spouse left the house. Our daughter slammed the door after running after him.
We were abandoned. My husband’s hands were shaking and he was breathing heavily. I could relate to him because an old hurt had just come back. However, I also recognized our daughter’s point that emotions are not something you can control.
We now had to make the most difficult choice: accept this man for our daughter’s happiness or risk permanently losing her trust.
