Calum Courtney, a cheerful and self-assured 10-year-old from Essex, entered the Britain’s Got Talent stage with his large and encouraging family. The child singer calmly informed the judges that he was not anxious and that he fully intended to win the entire competition, despite his young age showing no signs of the anxiety common for such a large stage. Calum chose to perform a well-known and infamously difficult Michael Jackson song during his audition, which instantly increased the pressure and prepared him for a formidable task in front of the infamously harsh panel.
Calum captivated the entire auditorium with his passionate and heartfelt performance of “Who’s Loving You” as soon as the music started. His tone and vocal authenticity were much above the assessors’ expectations for a youngster his age, and his voice had an unexpected depth and control. His confidence was well-founded, as seen by the standing ovation he received from the crowd and panel due to the real emotion he put into the performance.
The judge remarked that it was one of the strongest reactions they had ever seen when the young singer broke down in tears of joy throughout the feedback, demonstrating the emotional effect of his performance. Deeply impressed, Simon Cowell praised Calum, saying he had “soul” and “a very authentic voice,” describing the performance as “special.” With four “yeses” from the panel, Calum Courtney easily advanced to the next round after delivering an audition that millions of people would never forget.
