After years of anonymity, Los Angeles singer CJ Emmons was ready for his moment in the spotlight as he took the stage at Britain’s Got Talent. The unexpected discovery at the start of the audition was that judge Bruno Tonioli instantly recognized him, saying, “We know each other!” CJ acknowledged that he frequently performs on Dancing with the Stars in America, a show that Bruno judges. Even though his career has been successful and people “hear my voice but they don’t know who’s singing,” CJ clarified that he was eager to eventually come out of the shadows and be seen by the public.
CJ decided to perform the iconic “I Will Always Love You” before his crucial audition. His performance of the Whitney Houston classic, which began with a nearly “broken” and gentle delivery and progressively developed to a final, strong crescendo, was a demonstration of vocal skill. In addition to being flawless technically, the performance was incredibly moving and showed off the passion and talent he had been hiding for more than ten years. He was able to thoroughly transform a huge, well-known tune into his own, which caused the audience to react wildly.
His performance astounded the judges. “You are one of the best in the world; you deserve this moment,” Bruno Tonioli said, overcome with pride. Simon Cowell was as complimentary, referring to his performance as a “vocal masterclass” and acknowledging that CJ had gone above and above to make a statement. After admitting that he had been “chasing” Simon for a minute, CJ eventually got the confirmation he was looking for, receiving a well-earned unanimous four “yeses” from the panel and proceeding to the event.
