When 18-year-old Polish guitarist Marcin Patrzałek on the stage at America’s Got Talent, he instantly raised the bar by announcing that he had been accepted to an American university. Marcin had to demonstrate a high degree of musicality as a solo guitarist without depending on vocals. Instead of doing a traditional strumming routine, he showcased a very distinctive approach called fingerstyle percussive guitar, which combines intricate classical methods with repetitive, almost violent percussion. The audience and judges were intrigued by his unique approach because of the captivating ambiance this blend of genres created.
The subsequent performance turned out to be a true instrumental masterwork. Marcin used his entire acoustic guitar in a single piece, producing melodic material while simultaneously plucking bass lines and tapping the body for drum-like beats. His fingerwork was incredibly fast and intricate, displaying a level of maturity and technical proficiency well above his years. The judges’ worries about a non-singing act were immediately dispelled by his lively and energetic performance, which effectively turned one instrument into a complete band.
The judges’ reaction was very dramatic and extremely enthusiastic. Even Simon Cowell, who is usually the harshest critic, was entirely won over by Marcin’s demonstration of what the guitar was “invented for,” acknowledging that 99% of guitarists who audition are unable to play the instrument effectively. In a display of deep admiration for his skill, fellow judge Howie Mandel aptly described the performance when he said, “You didn’t play the guitar, you murdered the guitar.” Marcin received four resounding “yeses” for this outstanding audition, ensuring his advancement in the competition.
