Flau’jae, a gifted young rapper from Savannah, Georgia, is fourteen years old. He came to the America’s Got Talent (AGT) stage with a goal much bigger than simply winning a competition. She disclosed that her father, who was also a budding rapper, was sadly murdered prior to her birth. Not only did she want to fulfill his unfulfilled musical desire, but she also wanted to use her voice to speak out against the violence that killed him. In order to pay tribute to her father’s legacy and address the country, Flau’jae made the courageous and poignant choice to rap an original song on gun violence.
Flau’jae’s rendition of her original song was an instant hit. She made a strong case against gun violence with a remarkable, fast-paced flow and commanding stage presence. Her recurring, eerie query, “If you would have put that gun down, then he would have been here right now,” was the central theme of her rap, alluding to her deceased father. By urging everyone to “put your guns down,” the song was a powerful call to action that turned her personal tragedy into a call for world peace. Her captivating delivery and sophisticated lyrical substance showed a talent much beyond her 14 years of age.
Her message’s social significance and unvarnished honesty had a profound impact on the judges. Heidi Klum was clearly moved and complimented Flau’jae on being “so honest and so on point.” “Even though I don’t know a lot about rap music, I do know talent, and right now I believe we are witnessing the start of somebody’s career, big time,” said top judge Simon Cowell, who lavished praise. It was his “favorite audition by a clear mile,” he said. Flau’jae received four resounding “yeses,” solidifying her status as a potent new voice for change in addition to being a rising star.
