Entertainer BJ Griffin, 34, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, brought a distinctive instrument and a spirit of determination to the America’s Got Talent (AGT) stage. BJ disclosed that he had once had to make the difficult choice to give up football in high school in order to follow his real passion, music, despite his parents’ desires. Equipped with an electric cello, he declared that he was ready to fulfill his desire of “healing through his music with the world” because he was sick of “holding himself back.” The electric cello, an instrument that is rarely used in a modern singing test, captivated the judges and audience right away.
BJ began a beautiful and soulful rendition of the timeless song “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. His warm, strong vocals and the rich, melodic tones of the electric cello were expertly blended in this performance, which was a revelation. He commanded the stage, swaying and gesturing with the assurance of an accomplished performer, rather than merely playing and singing. His dedication to music was the right decision years ago, as evidenced by the completely unexpected combination of a deep, classical cello backbone and a contemporary, R&B vocal delivery that instantly captivated the entire auditorium.
His exceptional talent fully captivated the judges. Clearly pleased, Howie Mandel praised BJ’s energy and radiance, calling him his absolute “favorite” in the singing category. Realizing the star quality, Simon Cowell said, “That’s what you call a moment,” and praised BJ’s genuinely “stunning” and unique voice. Everyone on the panel remarked that his audition was exciting and unforgettable. Following such a strong performance that effectively combined a heartfelt modern approach with classical instrumentation, BJ Griffin received four unanimous “yeses” to advance in the competition.
