When Thomas Beatie became the first man in history to become pregnant sixteen years ago, it was an incredible occasion.
Thomas transitioned to identify as a transgender man after being born as a woman. When he became a dad and gave birth to his first daughter, Susan, the entire world took notice.
Thomas didn’t have an easy time reaching this milestone since he had to deal with threats from those who didn’t like men giving birth.
Thomas maintained his identity in spite of the difficulties, and he and his family have since expanded to include Susan and two kids.
Thomas Beatie’s tale continues to develop despite having three children in all.
In 1974, Thomas was born in Hawaii under the name Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino. He followed a road of transformation that attracted attention from all across the world. Thomas started identifying as a boy at the age of ten, and at the age of twenty-three, he began testosterone therapy.
Thomas was an ambitious young man, as seen by his accomplishments. He went on to become a model and made it to the Miss Hawaii Teen USA finals. Due to his passion for martial arts, he excelled in Taekwondo and karate and earned a junior championship in the 1992 Aloha State Games.
Thomas legally changed his gender to male in 2002 after having surgery to remove his breasts, but he kept his female reproductive organs. This decision was essential to his later pregnancy.
He abruptly stopped his testosterone treatment in 2006 in an attempt to become pregnant. Due to his then-wife Nancy’s infertility issues, Thomas bravely chose to carry the child himself.
When the world saw Thomas in 2008 with a noticeable pregnant tummy, his story became well-known worldwide, earning him the nickname “the pregnant man.”
His road wasn’t easy; even media outlets threatened him and sent hate mail.
“Health professionals have disregarded my male identity or neglected to recognize Nancy as my wife, and doctors have refused to treat us due to their religious convictions. We’ve experienced the hurt of mockery and lack of encouragement,” Thomas said.
Susan was born healthy and content after a difficult 48-hour labor. As the first legally male person to give birth to a woman while married, Thomas established a precedent by opting for a natural birth.
Thomas had more pregnancies over the course of five years without using testosterone, including one that ended in an ectopic pregnancy. Susan, Austin, and Jensen were nurtured as a family with strong core values by him and Nancy.
When Thomas appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in April 2008, his story received a lot of attention. He made the case for reproductive rights for all people, regardless of gender, in an open conversation.
He claimed in the interview that “having a child is a human desire, not limited by gender.”
These statements questioned conventional ideas of gender and family while highlighting his radical individuality.
Following an extended period of time apart from Nancy, Thomas wed his new partner, Amber, in 2016. Eventually, Thomas and Amber, who had known each other since 2012, moved to Oregon with Susan, Austin, Jensen, and Lily, Amber’s grandchild.
In an interview with Daily Mail, Thomas talked about his active family, saying, “With kids ranging from ages 3 to 7, it can get noisy, but we embrace it.”
Thomas still makes sporadic appearances on social media and media feeds sixteen years after his public disclosure.
He recently provided updates on his life while working as a stockbroker in Phoenix in an interview with USA Today. Together with tiny acting roles and public speaking engagements, he and Amber carry on with their tranquil life.
His older children alternate between his and their mother’s house, which is close by.
Thomas considers the story’s lasting impact as he recalls the passion that surrounded it years ago.
