Actor Ali MacGraw sacrificed her own career for Steve McQueen

Overnight, Ali MacGraw rose to fame in Hollywood. However, she vanished from the entertainment industry as soon as she became well-known.

The 85-year-old actress has made her home in a small, isolated community and is growing older gracefully, as seen by her gray hair.

MacGraw, Ali

Born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw, Ali MacGraw was born in Pound Ridge, New York, USA, on April 1, 1939. Before moving to Greenwich Village, her mother, Frances, was an artist who taught at a school in Paris. She wed Richard MacGraw, an artist as well. Ali was born in 1939.

Richard, Ali’s father, is said to have had problems as a child, which set him apart from other people.

He had fled to the sea at the age of sixteen after a dreadful upbringing in an orphanage. Later on, he would attend an art school in Munich, Germany.

“Daddy was quite irate and terrified. “He never forgave his real parents for giving him up,” Ali clarified, adding that her father spent his adult life “suppressing the rage that covered all his hurt.”

Childhood of Ali MacGraw

Their family was also struggling financially. Along with Ali and her brother Richard Jr., Frances and Richard were forced to move into a home on a Pound Ridge wilderness preserve, where they lived with an old couple.

“We shared the kitchen and bathroom with them; there were no doors,” Ali remarked. There was a complete absence of privacy. It was awful.

Mom Francis supported the family while working on a number of commercial art projects. Richard struggled to sell his paintings at the same time, which left him quite irritated. Richard, Ali’s brother, suffered as a result of his rage at home.

She remarked, “He was wonderful on good days, but terrible on bad days.” “Daddy used to severely beat my brother.” It was awful, and I saw it.

Being the daughter of artists, Ali understood that as she grew older, she wanted to pursue a career in creativity. After receiving a scholarship to attend Rosemary Hall Prep School, she relocated to Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1956.

At the age of 22, Ali MacGraw relocated to New York and secured her first position at Harper’s Bazaar as an assistant editor, assisting photographers.

New York fashion work

Diana Vreeland, a fashion editor, recalls hiring Ali as a “flunkie.” Have you ever watched The Devil Wears Prada? That was pretty much it.

“That was ‘Girl! Bring me a pencil, please,” MacGraw remembered.

For several months, the future Hollywood star worked as an assistant. After around six months, Ali MacGraw was hired as a stylist and granted a higher wage after fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky recognized her attractive appearance. In the end, she would remain in that role for six years.

Ruth Ansel, a former art director of Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar, remembers, “I don’t know where she got this work ethic, but Ali would come in at eight a.m., and many times I’d come back at one in the morning and she would still be doing things for the next day.”

Ali was an excellent stylist. However, she was soon requested to work as a model in front of the cameras. Before long, she was featured in television ads and on magazine covers everywhere in the world. Because one thing led to another, Ali fell headfirst into the acting industry.

A couple of years prior, Salvador Dali had drawn her naked. However, MacGraw decided she would rather be an actress than a model after the surrealist artist began kissing her toes.

Ali MacGraw: movies

Ali entered the film industry as an unknown stylist, and boy, did she do it with a bang.

Her performance took on a new depth because she was not taught the craft of filmmaking. She was adored by the audience for her innate attractiveness.

She was asked to star in the 1969 movie Goodbye, Columbus after playing a minor part in A Lovely Way to Die (1968). MacGraw won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer – Female, proving that it was a wise decision. She had her major international breakthrough the following year in a part that would essentially sum up her career.

Ali MacGraw’s agency had sent her a script. She loved it so much that she had cried twice after reading it. She made the decision that she truly wanted a role in it and arranged a meeting at the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel with Robert Evans, the film’s producer and chief of production at Paramount Pictures at the time. Evans fell deeply in love with her in addition to believing she was ideal for the role in the film Love Story.

Additionally, MacGraw costarred with Ryan O’Neal in the film Love Story as Jenny.Ali portrayed a working-class college student in the American romantic drama film, which went on to become a huge hit.

When Love Story debuted in theaters in 1970, the public loved it. At the time, it was the sixth biggest grossing film in US and Canadian history and went on to become the top film in the US.

Awar-winning actress

For her performance, MacGraw was nominated for an Academy Award, and the movie itself brought her five nominations and another victory. Additionally, she took home a second Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture.

In addition to his affection for her on screen, film producer Robert Evans fell in love with her in real life, and they were matched. Josh Evans, the couple’s son, was born two years after they were married in 1969.

Although Ali MacGraw was the hottest new actress of the 1970s, her marriage to Evans and private life would soon collapse. The two Hollywood celebrities clicked immediately after Steve McQueen came to their house to ask her to co-star with him in The Getaway.

“My knees began to knock as soon as I looked into those blue eyes,” MacGraw recalled. “I developed an obsession.”

After having an affair with McQueen, MacGraw left Evans to live in Malibu with the actor and her son Josh.

She remarked, “I loved that Steve was this very original, principled guy who didn’t seem to be part of the system.”

However, Ali eventually came to see that Steve McQueen had his own issues. Steve was transferred to a school for delinquent kids when he was 14 years old after his father abandoned his mother. According to MacGraw, he never trusted women again.

The fact that she worked and had a career of her own bothered him. Ali raised their sons at home for a period. However, Ali eventually found it impossible to comply with her husband’s demands.

Furthermore, if she merely glanced at another man, he would blow out. In addition, he wanted her to sign a prenuptial agreement committing her to not requesting anything in the event of a divorce. When they divorced in 1978, she followed the terms of the agreement.

She recalled, “Steve expected his ‘old lady’ to be there every night with dinner on the table, so I couldn’t even go to art class.”

“I wasn’t Steve’s definition of hot. There were usually blond bimbos around, and he enjoyed them.

This was the beginning of a somewhat difficult period in MacGraw’s life. She ceased using drugs after getting drunk and high on the set of the 1978 movie Convoy.

Getting out of show industry

At the same time, a number of her films, including Just Tell Me What You Want (1980) and Players (1970), were box office failures.

When MacGraw returned to show business in the late 1970s, she told The Guardian, “It’s brutal for women.”

“I doubt that any woman over 40 who has ever been in the public eye isn’t tired of the questions the media asks about you, the fashion industry, everything. It is inhumane.

For a brief period, MacGraw was a Hollywood star. She then made the decision to begin working in interior design, although she continued to pursue her career in show business. She had appearances in the television miniseries China Rose (1985) and The Winds of War (1983), but her life would soon take a turn for the worst.

Ali MacGraw believed she was worthless since she was unable to find any film job. However, she described being in love as “a drug high” and felt incomplete without a companion.

She drank a lot because she felt desperate and alone. She checked herself into the Betty Ford Clinic in California in 1986.

“When I drank, the worst things happened,” she remarked. “I lost my judgment; I was attracted to the husbands of other women.”

Tragedies in families

Josh Evans, her 15-year-old son, found it difficult to witness his mother’s suffering. After 30 days of group treatment, MacGraw emerged a stronger individual.

Another family tragedy happened in 1993 when a wildfire destroyed her California home. After that, she made the decision to leave Los Angeles and go to a community close to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“I live in Tesuque, a small village north of Santa Fe, New Mexico,” she disclosed last year.

McGraw claims that her neighbors value all of the community service she has been doing rather than viewing her as a former Hollywood celebrity.

She has been volunteering, for instance, at Santa Fe, New Mexico’s yearly International Folk Art Market.

After quitting acting, Ali MacGraw returned to the stage in 2006. In the Broadway version of the Danish movie Festen, she reunited with Ryan O’Neal, her co-star from Love Story.

MacGraw has been out of the spotlight for the past few decades, save from the Broadway production. She has dedicated her life to the cause of animal rights. has created a number of popular yoga videos.

In a 2019 interview with the Herald-Tribune, MacGraw said she’s still up for new challenges and opportunities.

“I’m open and curious, which is fortunate for someone my age,” MacGraw remarked. I don’t have a single favorite activity, and I feel sad if I can’t do it. However, I am aware that I am unhappy when I am not engaged in creative endeavors.

Ali MacGraw and Josh Evans

Ali abandoned acting, but her family is still involved in the industry. Son Josh Evans has established a solid reputation in Hollywood as an actor and filmmaker.

He also resembles his mommy quite a little!

Josh Evans

There was definitely a lot of pressure to be the kid of Robert Evans and Ali MacGraw, two well-known figures in Hollywood.

However, Josh Evans, who was born in January 1971, had always aspired to be in show business.

However, he never intended to work in the film industry for his first employment. It was just one of those things that happened; he had no aspirations of becoming an actor.

Josh Evans had a minor role in the 1989 film Dream a Little Dream, but he had bigger plans. He used to visit the manager’s office as a youngster with nothing to lose to watch the movie breakdowns.

Josh Evans is a director and actor.

At that point, he ran upon Oliver Stone, the well-known director, whom he knew. At the time, he was working on the Tom Cruise film Born on the Fourth of July. Josh also wanted to join.

“I just knew [Oliver Stone] from Platoon at the time. The younger brother had a part in the film he was working on with Tom Cruise. Josh Evans remembers, “He set me up with Oliver Stone because I wanted to play that part.”

Oliver said, ‘Oh, you think you look like Tom Cruise?’ as we sat down. I see now that he was making fun of me, but I said, “Yeah, I do.” “We’ll see what happens,” he remarked. I received a call for an audition four months later, and I was cast. You could sense how wonderful the film was going to be, and it was really thrilling.

Josh has had a fantastic acting and directing career since then. He has been acting and directing since 1991, when he starred in the biographical movie The Doors.

Josh Evans

He has directed eight films to date, including Death in the Desert (2015), which starred Michael Madsen. But what appeals to him the most?

Josh Evans states, “I am definitely more at ease on the side of the camera that does not show myself.”

“I am not against it if an intriguing chance arises. Other people, in my opinion, are more qualified and more desirous of it than I am. While directing and sharing my stories is something I would do for free, acting is more of a job, but I enjoy it once I get it done.

Josh Evans’s relatives

Josh is a really attractive man who genuinely looks a lot like her mother, Ali MacGraw, especially in his large, amazing eyes.

Robert Evans, Ali’s father and ex-husband, died in 2019. But when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, the family had the wonderful recollection of being united for him.

Josh has had two marriages. He wed Roxy Saint, an American singer and performer, in October 2012. Grandma Ali MacGraw loves to spend time with her amazing family, and by that time, their son Jackson was two years old.

Regarding her son, MacGraw remarked, “He’s so wonderful.” “He’s my favorite person on the planet, and he dates a girl I’m crazy about.” Among other things, friendship and respect are very important aspects of their relationship.

Josh Evans and Ali MacGraw are undoubtedly extremely proud of their amazing family. We hope the best for them and who knows, perhaps we’ll see them on the same stage or on the same set of a future film.
