Alejandro Rosales Castillo was listed as one of the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted.” Since he left the nation in 2017, he has been on the list. He was wanted for interrogation in connection with the murder of his Charlotte, North Carolina, coworker, “Sandy” Ly Le, age 23.

Castillo was caught on Friday, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, and local federal police in North Carolina disclosed that Ly Le’s alleged killer was being held in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico.

The accused murderer, 27, is still being held while authorities wait for his extradition to North Carolina, the scene of the crime over ten years ago.

He had been able to lead a comparatively “normal life” despite the FBI search and the $250,000 reward for his capture.

“Alejandro Castillo’s arrest is the fifth Ten Most Wanted Fugitive captured under this administration and this FBI since last year – more than the entire previous four years combined,” said FBI Director Patel in reference to his arrest.

“That’s no accident,” he continued. When an administration supports law enforcement in carrying out its goal, they perform the task better than anybody else. We can finally start the process of providing Sandy Ly Le’s family with the long-awaited justice they deserve thanks to the excellent work of our Charlotte team, FBI Legat Mexico, local and federal allies, and colleagues in Mexico.

It was reported that Ly Le and Castillo had a brief romantic relationship while they were coworkers at a restaurant in Charlotte. Castillo, then 17 years old, found himself in debt to his coworker. He did not reimburse her after their breakup and instead started dating another coworker.

Castillo is suspected of driving his ex to a forested area after stealing $1,000 from her, after which he shot her in the head. Later, her body was discovered discarded in a ravine.

“He lived a normal life for more than nine years, probably thinking he would never be caught, but our seasoned investigators never gave up the hunt for justice,” said FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr., who was in charge of the case.

“Sadly, Sandy’s family started another new year without her. We hope knowing her accused killer is in custody will provide some level of solace now,” he continued.

Congressman Pat Harrigan of North Carolina’s 10th district was also ecstatic with the arrest, posting on X, “Nearly nine years after a Charlotte murder, the man responsible is finally in custody.” Thank you to FBI Charlotte, CMPD, and our federal allies for their unwavering commitment to bringing justice back to North Carolina.

As the grieving family deal with all of these new developments in the case, we hope that justice is done to them.
