Bobby will be 31 in a few months. According to Guinness World Records, he is the oldest dog on earth. No dog in the history of our world has lived to this age.
Despite his mature age for a dog, Bobby is still very lively. And this is even though the dog has already survived half the average age of the breed.
Bobby was born on May 11, 1992. This information is confirmed by the Portuguese government’s pet database operated by the National Veterinary Union. His breed originally sounds like Rafeiro do Alentejo. And in our latitudes, he is called the Portuguese guard dog or the Portuguese mastiff. On average, dogs of this breed live about 12-14 years. Bobby managed to live for nearly 31 years. All this time he lived in a Portuguese village in the family of a man named Leonel. Bobby guarded the cows.
The pet almost broke the 100-year-old record. His predecessor, the dog Bluey (1910-1939), was an Australian Shepherd who lived to be 29 years and 5 months old. Bobby is not only the oldest living dog, he is the oldest dog in history.
The life story of this sweet dog will touch your heart. “I was eight when he was born,” says his owner, Leonel. Three more puppies were born with Bobby. Leonel’s father was a hunter, so there were always many dogs in the house.
Bobby managed to survive by chance. No one else noticed him when his father took the puppy out of the house.
Leonel remembers that he and his brother were very sad. However, the next day he finds Gila (the mother of the puppies) continuing to visit the outbuilding where the baby was born.
“We thought it was strange because there was no reason for her to go there anymore. There are no more puppies,” the man recalled.
The boys decided to chase the dog and found her puppies. Leonel and his brothers decided to keep Bobby’s existence a secret.
A newborn puppy usually takes a week or two before he can open his eyes for the first time. This is due to the development of the central nervous system.
Finally, Leonel’s parents discovered the dog. He had already opened his eyes and had nowhere to go.
They decided to get a pet.
He managed to reach this age because, according to Leonel, Bobby was always away from the noisy city and he was never chained or put on a leash. He is a very social dog who is used to spending time outside.
Bobby now is less active than before. He likes to lie in the backyard of the house with his four cats who also live in Leonel’s house. The dog started getting bad eyesight and the owner started noticing more often that the dog collides with various objects in his path.
