When a 70-year-old granny bought 40 kg of meat from her regular butcher every day, the butcher decided to follow her one day and called the police to find out where all that meat was going
The little, stooped old woman visited the same butcher shop daily. She hauled a squeaky-wheeled shopping trolley and wore an outdated coat.
She handed them nicely folded banknotes and murmured softly, “As usual, forty kilograms of beef.”
Each time, the young butcher was incredulous. Forty pounds! Nearly half a carcass, that is. He initially believed that she could have a big family to feed. But it continued week after week.
The woman simply picked up her luggage and walked away, not saying anything and never meeting anyone’s gaze. She smelled strongly of something the butcher couldn’t place, a combination of rotting meat and iron.
In the market, rumors immediately proliferated. The vendors muttered: — They claim she is providing for her son’s family. — Or perhaps her canines. — Maybe she’s operating a covert eatery.
Though he didn’t trust the rumors, the butcher’s interest increased daily. He made the decision to follow her one evening. He kept his distance from her and followed her when she left the store.
Pulling the large trolley full of meat along the cold road, the woman traveled steadily but slowly. She drove past a few deserted garages on the outskirts of town before making her way to an old factory that had stood unused for a decade.
The butcher came to a halt. She took the bags inside and vanished.
After twenty minutes, the elderly woman reappeared, but with nothing. The flesh was nowhere to be seen.
The same event occurred the following day. The butcher was unable to resist on the third day. He silently followed her after waiting for her to enter.
There was an odd odor within. He heard weird, dull sounds. His heart almost stopped when he peered through a gap in the wall. There were…
Four huge lions sat behind big cages. In the faint light of a hanging bulb, their eyes shone brightly. Fresh bits of steak and bones were on the floor.
And the same elderly woman was seated in an ancient armchair in the corner, muttering softly: “Easy, my darlings.” You’ll have your fight soon. People are going to come watch you.
The butcher took a startled step back as one of the lions let out a roar that reverberated throughout the deserted hallway. The woman noticed him when she turned her head.
She growled, “What are you doing here?”
The man contacted the cops right away after running outside.
The officers were shocked to learn that the elderly woman had once worked as a biologist. She had taken a few animals “to save them” after the neighborhood zoo closed, but she quickly discovered she could profit from them.
The police discovered claw marks on the walls and an arena in the rear of the facility. The woman had been planning illicit lion fights, which affluent spectators had been discreetly attending.
