Colin Thackery was 88 when he walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage in 2019, proudly wearing his scarlet Chelsea Pensioner uniform. He lives at the Royal Hospital Chelsea and told the judges he had been singing in one way or another for 80 years.
His song was “Wind Beneath My Wings”, a tribute to his wife Joan. They married in 1950 and spent 66 years together before she died in his arms in December 2016. As he sang, every line felt like a message to her. 🎶
When he finished, one judge said there was not a dry eye in the house. Another called it the most perfect tribute, and another thanked him and every veteran for being the wind beneath all of our wings. He got four yeses.
Colin showed that it is never too late to do what you love, or to sing about the people you love most. ❤️
