Simon Called It His Idea of a Nightmare, Then This 16-Year-Old Xylophone Player Won Him Over

Musician playing the xylophone with mallets

Ashley Ellis was 16 when he brought his xylophone to the Britain’s Got Talent stage. He lives on a farm with his mum and dad, in a family that has farmed for hundreds of years, but he dreams of a career in music instead.

He had only been playing for two years, starting at his percussion teacher’s house before buying the very xylophone he played that day. His fast, lively performance soon had the audience clapping and cheering along. 🎶

The judges were not convinced at first. One said the style made him feel like he was at a Munich beer festival, yet admitted Ashley was a brilliant player. Simon Cowell confessed that this would normally be his idea of a nightmare, but he listened to the audience and changed his mind.

A farm boy with an unusual instrument proved that real skill can win over even the toughest critic in the room. ❤️
